After this Incident the ongoing discussions on the Broadcast bill becomes all the more important. A private Hindi news channel and its reporter are now under scrutiny for the sting operation that caught the school teacher Uma Khurana who was accused of forcing the students into prostitution. This whole sting operation turned out to be a hoax firstly because police could find no evidence against Uma and secondly of course the unedited tapes of the entire drama revealed that it is the poor teacher who is the victim. Another twist in the turn came when the girl who pretended to be the student was neither a student nor a prostitute.
Whatever the confusion was, it cannot be denied that the Sting Operation was false only done for some personal monetary enmity. Surprisingly, it is important for us to see that how much TR P's the channel got, this case is as sensational as a reality show! How much coverage the print media did for the same maybe out of obligation. In this context if we talk about the broadcast Bill, it is essential for us to see how inevitable the media regulation is. But as quoted by Rajdeep Sardesai the only problem that is face by the media in our country is lack or in fact absence of self regulation. Considering all the facts the it is important that the broadcast bill be implemented in such a way that the content code should be self regulatory and each channel should appoint an independent Ombudsman to monitor the adherence to it. The Ombudsman here refers to an official who is appointed by the government or the Organisation to look into the issues of public and analyse them.
Before introducing the Broadcast Bill in a jiffy, it is essential to note that content should not be government regulated. If it happens, like everywhere corruption will soon enter the Media which is the biggest Pillar of Democracy. The motive is to regulate media, to keep a check on it and making it answerable not to politicize it. if it happens the leaders of our country will be the most happiest people on earth but poor country and its citizens will suffer. The reason why the government wishes to bring media under its Licencing just like radio till that is to basically to shield their own corrupted activities that would secure them from any public interference.
If the Broadcast Bill introduced will allow the Government hold over media, the the future of the country will be promising in terms of failure. Dasmunsi, the Indian and Broadcast minister should consider all the facts before taking any such step.
